José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal (often pronounced [xo?se ?peð?o ?alma?seða pas?kal] in Spanish; born on April 2, 1975) is Chilean and American actor. After spending almost two decades in small roles in both theater and TV, Pascal had his breakout role as Oberyn Martell in the fourth season of the HBO fantasy show *Game of Thrones* (2014). He became even more prominent through the character of Javier Peña in the Netflix crime show *Narcos* (from 2015 to 2017). He later appeared in the films *The Great Wall* (in 2016), *Kingsman: The Golden Circle* (released in 2017), *The Equalizer 2* (2018), and *Triple Frontier* (2019).
Pascal's leading roles as the character Din Djarin in the Disney+ sci-fi series *The Mandalorian* (2019–present) and Joel Miller in the HBO post-apocalyptic series *The Last of Us* (starting in 2023) brought him international fame, earning him a reputation for portraying adoptive father figures. With the latter role, he received numerous accolades, including a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe nomination. He took further parental roles in the movies *We Can Be Heroes* (2020), *Strange Way of Life* (2023), and as Fink the fox in *The Wild Robot* (scheduled for 2024). Pascal also appeared in big-budget films such as *Wonder Woman 1984* (2020) and *Gladiator II* (set to release in 2024).
Having started in theater in 1999, he appeared on Broadway for the first time as Edmund in a 2019 adaptation of King Lear. He was named one of the most influential people of 2023 by Time magazine in 2023.
